The New York Times has a detailed article on slavery and civil war. This document sets out in detail why the North's victory was so essential to end the slave trade in other major slave states of that time, although the slaves in the U.S. itself, only 4% of the total accounted for slaves in America. Very interesting facts that make the war appear again in a somewhat different light.
